Effect of Children¡¯s Maladjustment to School on Smartphone Addiction: Mediating Effect of Depression and Aggression

Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of children¡¯s maladjustment to school on their addiction to smartphone and the mediating effect of depression and aggression of children on their maladjustment to school and smartphone addiction. Subjects included 400 boys and girls at the fifth and sixth grade in S City of Chungcheongnam-do and J City of Gyeongsangnam-do. Descriptive analysis, correlation analysis, t-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis were conducted. Findings are as follows: 1) no significant difference was found in maladjustment to school, depression, and smartphone addiction depending on gender although boys showed a higher correlation between aggression and smartphone addiction than girls; 2) a negative correlation was found between maladjustment to school and smartphone addiction, maladjustment to school and depression, and maladjustment to school and aggression while a positive correlation was found between depression and smartphone addiction and aggression and smartphone addiction; and 3) depression and aggression showed an indirect mediating effect between maladjustment to school and smartphone addiction. Suggestions, implications, and limitations of the study are also discussed.
